This tool has been specifically developed to help SME users to assess the toxicity, environmental fate and human health effects of their chemicals using freely available non- testing methods such as (Q)SAR.

The TESS team recognized that there is an urgent need to help SMEs to find relevant information and to help them use (Q)SAR to fill the data gaps for their products so as to reduce the cost of REACH registration.

The material and resources available with this tool will help you to understand the process of filling the data gap and to identify the hazard of your chemical being persistant, bioaccumlative and toxic (PBT) using (Q)SAR.

  

To reduce cost and time

To be able to assess toxicity animal tests are usually required and these are very expensive.  To reduce costs you will want to find validated toxicity data that has already been obtained on your chemical.  If this is not available you will need to decide whether you need to do animal testing. The easiest, cheapest and fastest way is to assess the toxicity of your chemical is to use a computer based method (such as QSAR).  These methods have been approved to replace animal testing if they meet the REACH guidance on using QSAR. This tool provides some guidelines to SMEs on the freely available (Q)SAR tools and models than can be used to fill your data gap, to assess the environmental impact of your chemical (PBT statue) and to identify the hazard of your chemical being a potential mutagen or endocrine disruptor for REACH purpose.
